Indonesia
The best time of the year to go to Indonesia is in
the dry season (May - September) when the south-east trade winds blow offshore at most of
the famous surf spots. The largest, most reliable swells, generated by cold weather fronts
in the South Indian Ocean, usually arrive at mid-winter during this time.
South Africa
During the winter (April to October), southwest swells are
regularly created as Antarctic storms move east. The winter months are characterised by
northwest winds, which swing round to the southwest before the next frontal system. The
East Coast has numerous SE facing points that have offshore conditions most of the winter
months.
Mauritius, Madagascar and
Reunion
The best time for surfing is during the winter months when
anticyclones deep in the South Atlantic generate huge swells which march in a north
easterly direction up the east coast of South Africa towards Madagascar, Mauritius and
Reunion. During this season the off shore southeast trade winds are almost guaranteed in
Reunion and Mauritius, while along the south western portion of Madagascar the best time
for surfing is from April to September.
Maldives
The best time to go to the Maldives for surf is the
southwest monsoon season, which runs from March to November. June and July can be windy
with squalls. Generally February to April and September and October are windless, and
conditions glassy
Philippines
The southwest monsoon predominates from July through
November, being offshore at most of the surf spots. The biggest swells are those
associated with typhoons which can hit at any time of the year, particularly between July
to December. |
