Following on from the first steps of
the Association tentatively taken in the Pretoria region in 1943,
two more branches were formed. Cape Town in mid-1946 and then, shortly
afterwards, Johannesburg in October of that year. It was then realised
that a controlling body should be organised to co-ordinate the various
branches and, therefore, an Area Office was formed in March 1948 in
Johannesburg.
In later years another seven branches were formed in Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London, Queenstown, Grahamstown, Somerset West and Natal Midlands.
In 1993, Grahamstown was forced to
call it a day through lack of membership and the advancing age of
those who remained - soon to be followed by Queenstown, in the following
year.
Sadly, again in May 2002, the reaper
has removed yet another branch from our area. Hottentots Holland (Somerset
West) has had to throw in the towel and laid up their Standard at
the SAAF Air Force Museum Ysterplaat (Cape Town).
South African Area is currently represented
by seven branches and is watched over by an Area Office now situated
in the mother city, Cape Town.
