Skating on thin ice.

I saw you skating
on the lake,
Far away, a picture of grace.
Was it you, or my mistake?
I wasn't sure - couldn't see your face.
I've spoken
often, (you wouldn't hear),
And held you closely in my head,
So far away and yet so near:
You could not be with me instead!
Thank you for
memories and for songs,
For the happy times that they have brought.
One has to stay where one belongs -
Skating on the lake - was it you I thought.
The lake once
warn now turns to ice:
The cold is bitter - the warmth was nice!
