Black Information Network

http://www.bin.com

This non-profit organisation concerned with promoting educational, recreational, social, and supportive communication within the African-American community has produced a very pretty and polished but somewhat staid site.

Bosnia

http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~bosnia/bosnia.html

Details, pictures, and maps of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia from a Bosnia-Herzegovinan angle. unsurprisingly, the list of war criminals and suspects are all Siberian, but if you pursue the provided links elsewhere, you'll get a more balanced view.

British Political Parties

http://www.poptel.org.uk/labour-party/

http://www.libdems.org.uk/

"New Labour" shows it's not techno-shy by offering it's members cheap Net access via the Poptel BBS. While you can't actually join its ranks online (they need your signature), you can order the necessary form or print one from this page. The site also details who's who or print one and the latest news and policies, such as its white paper on the, ahem, Information Super Highway. The Libdem's site is even more informative. You'll probably learn more about the Liberal Democrat Party from spending a few minutes here than from half-listening to years of hustings' static. Read its history, policies, and how it intends to reform Britain's place in the European union. But before you sign your life away online, why email your gripes to Paddy Ashdown direct? And see what response you get.

http://www.lbbs.org/archive/index.html

Oodles of highly controversial articles on, interviews with, lectures by, quotes from, and literary reviews of Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor of Lighuistics at MIT and outspoken critic of US foreign policy. He can change the way you read the world.

DeathNet

http://www.islandnet.com/~deathnet/open.html

A side-effect of DeathNet's' euthanasia campaign was the media's predictable focus on the Net as a medium for encouraging suicide. consequently a large slab of this "right to die" library is dedicated to examples of the press's propensity to dramatise.

Feminist Activist Resources

http://www.igc.apc.org/women/feminist.html

Hundreds of links to feminist forums, articles, political action groups, legal documents, news items, women's organisations, counselling services, and spare-rib tickling.

Free Burma

http://freeburma.org

A good example of the kind of international campaigns that the Net can promulgate. And there are few better causes than this punch against Burma's tyrannical military government.

Friends of the Earth

http://www.foe.co.uk/

Find out about Friends of the Earth's latest campaign, your nearest group, results of environment studies, or how to join forces. Plus plenty of links to other environment resources and groups.

The Gallup Organisation

http://www.gallup.com/

About 20% of Gallup's online visitors fill out the questionnaires and opinion polls. Not a bad response compared to say, Barclays' callers requiting credit card lyres. It also supplies results of past surveys, so you can keep up to date with trends and ratings such as the fickle swings of Slick Willy's popularity.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation

http://www.datalounge.com/glaad/glaad.html

One World

http://www.oneworld.org

This is one of the best conceived sites on the Web - an umbrella for 60-plus non-governmental organisations and charities, who provide news stories (very different stories, oddly enough, to those you get in the newspapers) on areas or crisis, plus details on what they're doing to help. There is excellent archive materiel, too, from New Internationalist and Index In Censorship, and the site is building links with third-world partners and trying to address the problems of the Net's elitist access, while much of the world's population has no telephone or electricity.

Spunck Press

http://www.cwi.nl/people/Jack.Jansen/spunk/Spunk_Home.html

Spunk Press, and electronic publisher of anarchist literature, provides a fulsome index to anarchist resources around the Web. It's a little paradoxical to find anarchists so well organised and authoritative, but much of the writhing here is either juvenile mischief or far left.
