PARAGLIDER CLASSIFICATION SCHEDULE

1998 - 2002

Any info on paragliders not on this list, please submit to the SAHPA Office. Paragliders not on this list are rated as Prototype by default.

Where different sizes in a range of glider models have different test ratings, the classification could be given according to the higher rating.

Where DHV and Afnor/Acpuls and/or other ratings are listed, it must be noted that not all sizes are necessarily certified by all the testing authorities. It must also be noted that there could be manufacturing differences between gliders of the same name tested by different testing authorities. Where this is suspected and/or confirmed, the gliders may be separately classified in South Africa. To assist with identifying the different ratings, a cross reference system of asterisks are used in the “Original Test Rating” column to the “Sizes Certified & Classified” column.

Standard of skill required for different classifications:

Basic class: Learner Pilot (0+flights) / Basic License. Basic class will usually be awarded to paragliders rated DHV 1, AFNOR Standard, and those whose historical history shows good training characteristics.
Intermediate class: Learner Pilot, (20+flights) / Basic License. Intermediate class will usually be awarded to paragliders rated DHV 1, DHV 1-2, AFNOR Standard, and occasionally DHV 2 and AFNOR Performance. Some intermediate gliders will require higher skill levels, i.e. 80 flights.
Sports class: Basic License, 100+ flights minimum (Safety Course highly recommended). Some gliders require Sport Licence and more flights. Sports class will usually be awarded to paragliders rated DHV 2 and occasionally AFNOR Performance or DHV 2-3, with specified flight requirements for different gliders. “Hotter” gliders will require higher skill levels, i.e. 250 flights and Sport Licence and is classified as Serial Class.
Serial class: Sport License, 250+ flights minimum. Serial class will usually be awarded to paragliders rated DHV 2-3 and AFNOR Performance, and occasionally DHV 2.
Competition class: Sport Licence (400+ flights) (SIV course recommended). Competition class will be awarded to paragliders rated AFNOR Competition, DHV 3.
Prototype: Sport Licence (500 + flights), with extensive flying experience on Competition class gliders. Paragliders that have no ratings and no historical track record from before 1998, will be regarded as prototype.
Tandem class: Tandem Rating. Tandem class will always be awarded to paragliders rated AFNOR Tandem & DHV Tandem.
Tandem Solo gliders: Heavy pilots may fly tandem gliders solo provided that they fall within the minimum weight range, and that the glider has a DHV 1-2 rating maximum. Afnor rated tandem gliders are not acceptable for solo pilots.

Note: Since 1997 no new uncertified gliders have been accepted on this classification list. Uncertified gliders manufactured and classified prior to 1997 are accepted, due to historical track record. Since 1998 new uncertified gliders are regarded as proto type gliders.

Note: Pilots are advised that if additional information about DHV or Afnor certification regarding specific gliders and/or sizes is required, that the DHV certification can be obtained from the DHV home page http://www.dhv.de/ under Technik and all the Afnor certification from the French Federation’s home page http://www.ffvl.fr/FFVL/Commission_securite/commission_securite.html at the bottom of the page (all the Afnor certification only in French, but understandable).

Note: Should any pilot be sold a glider under false pretences regarding the rating, the pilot should lay a complaint with SAHPA.

Where the classification below is perceived as being incorrect, detailed information and documentary proof must be submitted to the SAHPA Office for re-assessment. (To query classifications, as issued below, please submit all relevant DHV, SHV, or Afnor, documentation to SAHPA.) Notwithstanding publication or assessment errors by SAHPA, the ratings given in this document take precedence.
