Internet Theory![]()

Due to my internet experience, people who know nothing about the net always ask me what it is, so I have created a theory, or comparison that explains the net in detail !

Okay, let us start like this, The interenet is a world full of information which is commonly called the WWW -World Wide Web. Picture the WWW as a library and picture your PC as a car. Now you have to get to the library. First of all you need Petrol for your car to go, so you need something that let's your PC go to the WWW, this is commonly called your service provider, which gives you the ability to go to the WWW. It also costs a certain amount of money and different petrols (service providers) offer different performance levels.
Now you have to go to the library, you cannot just GO there, you have to go via a road, this road is commonly called a Telephone Line, which travels through your modem/telephone .
Once you are next to the library you cannot just walk through the doors, you need to open them, the tool that let's you open the door - (almost like a key) is a browser, you can get many makes of keys such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, the more complicated the lock (site) is the better your key (browser) must be!
A download is when you actually take something from the WWW and put it on your PC. This is like taking out a book from your library. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) = to download programs, HTTP = just for viewing. So a complication is if you have to return the book in 2 weeks, It is similar to shareware. Another complication is zipping, if you unzip it you open it, I.E. - opening the book up!
