Hints and Tips

For Using South African Mohair

When cutting.....

Cut through the pile and backing. It is not necessary to avoid cutting the pile like you normally do when working with mohair. This makes cutting out the shapes easier and quicker.

When stitching.....

Once you have cut all your bear shapes out, over-sew the raw edges with a loose, wide zig-zag stitch to secure them and add stability. This also controls the pile and keeps it to the inside of the shape when stitching the seams. It's certainly worth the effort!

When hand-dying....

Use the same method as above for preparing your shapes and then hand-dye them. If you are new to hand-dying you will find it easier to hand-dye smaller shapes and so obtain a good over-all colour.

Obtaining different effects ....

When purchasing your mohair off the roll, the pile will be fairly flat and, using the fabric as it is, will give your bear a lovely, old, traditional look. For an unusual distressed effect you can boil the fabric before making it up. Want a fluffy, soft, wispy look? Once your bear is made up, gently lift the pile by brushing it with a finger teasel brush and you will have a different look altogether!
