The Sayings of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov:

ANGER

If you can control your temper, your enemies will never daunt you.

Your wisdom disappears while you are angry.

Someone, who is easily irritated, can have no real quality to his life.

Jealousy leads to anger. Anger leads to depression.

An angry parent does nothing for the intellectual growth of their child.

BLESSING

Don't let the blessing of a gentile be light in your eyes.

He, who draws those far away closer to Torah,

is given the ability to Bless.

CHALLENGE

When you find yourself presented with two opportunities to do good

- do the most difficult first.

Never think that you cannot make an enormous difference to this world.

Every person changes the way the world is.

One person can alter the universe.

 Wherever G-d is to be found, a different order prevails;
something small and seemingly insignificant can hold and contain infinity.

DRESS

The way a person dresses offers one a glimpse into their inner character.

Top_of_Page

DRINK

The secrets of Torah are never revealed to a drunkard.

Whoever becomes intoxicated is certain to do at least some damage in one way or another.

FEAR

Someone with the awe of heaven totally implanted in his heart,

will find that all of a sudden people will begin to listen to him.

He will also find that in a situation where others

may become frightened or scarred, he will know no fear.

Fear causes one to stumble.

If you get scarred, think of our father Avraham,

as his image can dispel fear.

Fear saps you of your strength.

Sometimes you become frightened but don't know why.

If this happens, recite the Shema. You may require some form of

protection. Although you might not be able to perceive danger at that

time, your heavenly guide sees what you cannot see.

If you feel fear, try to sing a happy tune.

Worry and stress cause us to become fearful.

Fear causes us to lie.

Someone, who is impressionable and easily effected by money and

wealth, will also be readily prone to feelings of fear.

Anger causes fear.

FOOD

Know that there is healing to be found in every kind of herb and grass.

Someone who no longer tastes flavour in their food,

has probably also drifted further away from G-d

FRIENDS

When your friend says something incorrect, instead of aggressively

jumping down to his throat, try correcting him graciously and gently.

When you listen to another person telling his problems,

be careful that they do not become yours.

If you find yourself reliant upon another, your life is not a life.

If you don't help your friend when he's in trouble,

it's as if you caused it for him.

With real faith you will not need to rely on friends.

HEALTH

Eat and drink beneath your means.

Dress according to your means.

But honour your wife and children beyond your means.

The body must be perfected before the soul can be perfected.

JOY

If you have to give a Torah discourse,

choose a happy subject on which to speak.

When you perform a mitzvah (good deed) with joy,

it shows that your heart is whole with G-d.

Joy opens the heart.

Diet plays an important role in determining your moods.

Advising someone well, leads to joy.

Certain dances and even movements can bring one to a state of joy.

Music brings joy.

Faith brings joy.

Joy brings out the hidden honour in a man.

KINDNESS

One, who gives a penny to a poor person,

is blessed with six "measures".

However, one who speaks nicely to him, builds up his confidence, and treats him with dignity, is blessed with eleven "measures".

Hospitality is a wonderful thing.

Kindness draws those who are far away, nearer. It also sets a welcoming
distance between ourselves and those (in our family) who are too near.

Kindness in the first instance it bridges the gap.

In the second, it creates space.

Someone, who gives with joy, has a large and full heart.

A kind person no longer needs the influence of his father's merit.

When you want to become close to a Tzadic,

go to a Tzadic who shows compassion.

MAZEL (Luck)

Every person has a "mazal" which can protect him from harm.

Sadness brings bad mazal.

Top_of_Page

MESSIAH

Don't be a carrier of bad news if you can at all help it.

Bad news only pulls you down.

If you spread good news you will be clothed with the level of Elijah the Prophet. (Elijah is the ultimate carrier of good news. He will announce the arrival of Messiah.)

In the time of Messiah it will no longer be necessary to search for

G-d through wisdom or theology.

Top_of_Page

MIRACLES

if there is another more natural means of redeeming yourself. In a time of crises one must prepare for battle and not rely on a miracle.

Top_of_Page

MONEY

Someone who lusts after money,

will find that he will not be able to maintain his standards for too long.

Top_of_Page

MUSIC

The manner in which you sing, and your attitude towards music in general, is often an indication of your acceptance of the yoke of Torah.

Top_of_Page

PEACE

There can be no peace in the world until there is joy in the world.

It's through pursuing peace that one comes to faith.

The building of Jerusalem is dependent upon peace.

Where there is no peace - prayers cannot be answered.

Where there is peace there is no fear.

Even wicked people can experience good if there is peace among them.

Top_of_Page

PLACES

It is good to make a habit out of looking at the sky.

Certain places are more germane to good than others.

Be careful when and where you teach Torah.

Don't say Torah in a place where it will not be heard.

And even when it will be heard, weigh up how much Torah to give and how much to hold back.

Never say over all you know at once.

Not every place is conducive to Torah and good deeds.

This is why a person is sometimes destined to move from one place to another.

It's wonderfully beneficial to study near a river.

It's easier to understand and comprehend something from a mountain or other high place.

SADNESS

Depression can cause you to loose your money.

Sadness can actually cause your facial features to distort.

Sadness drives G-d away from us.

No one likes being with a miserable person.

It doesn't take long before his friends begin to actually despise him.

Sadness invites disaster.

The more time you spent wallowing in self-pity,

the more you lay yourself open for even more trouble.

Sadness and depression can often be overcome by going out and doing some kindness - by giving something of yourself to others.

It is a great Mitzvah to always be happy
